Trump informs Congress: We are in armed conflict with drug cartels
Drug-trafficking ship hit by US

US President Donald Trump officially decided this week that the United States is now in a "non-international armed conflict" with drug cartels and told Congress that the administration is labeling them "unlawful combatants," according to a memo obtained by The New York Times.

Last month, Trump ordered US military strikes on three suspected drug-smuggling ships in the Caribbean Sea. At least two of them originated from Venezuela.

"The attack killed 3 male narco-terrorists aboard the ship, which was in international waters," President Trump wrote on Truth Social. "No US forces were harmed in this attack. Stop the sale of Fentanyl, Narcotics and Illegal Drugs to America, and the commission of violence and terrorism against Americans!!!" Trump wrote.

The attacks sparked a national debate over whether or not they are a flagrant violation of American and international law.

Senior US officials said that smuggling deadly drugs like fentanyl and cocaine will no longer be treated as a law enforcement issue, it is now a military issue, especially after the designation of Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations.
