Jane Goodall, the soft-spoken intellectual and environmentalist known for her extraordinary and comprehensive research on chimpanzees, in which she documented the primates' distinct personalities and tool use, has died at the age of 91.

The environmental advocate became a household name, even among younger generations, through her appearances in documentaries and on television, as well as her travels to address packed audiences around the world.

The Jane Goodall Institute announced the primatologist's death on Wednesday in an Instagram post. According to the Washington-based institute, Goodall died of natural causes while in California on a speaking tour of the United States.

Her discoveries "revolutionized science and she was a tireless advocate for the protection and restoration of our natural world," the release said.

While living among chimpanzees in Africa decades ago, Goodall documented them doing activities previously believed to be exclusive to humans. Her observations and subsequent appearances in magazines and documentaries in the 1960s transformed the way the world perceived not only humans' closest biological relatives but also the emotional and social complexity of all animals, bringing them into the public consciousness.

“Out there in nature, alone, when you’re alone, you can become part of nature and your humanity doesn’t get in the way,” she told the Associated Press in 2021. “It’s almost like an out-of-body experience where you suddenly hear different sounds and smell different scents and you’re actually part of this wonderful tapestry of life.”
