A 45-year-old German man who offered online babysitting services was convicted on Tuesday of child sexual abuse in a case that shocked even investigators and led them to uncover many more suspected abusers.

The regional court in Cologne sentenced the defendant, whose name has not been released for privacy reasons, to 14 years and six months in prison.

Investigators said the 45-year-old had documented the abuse of infants, children and teenagers and had shared videos and images of "unimaginable brutality" with dozens of people. He also ordered that he be kept in secure isolation after completing his sentence.

Prosecutors had asked the court to impose a 15-year sentence, the maximum normally allowed under German law, arguing that the defendant's crimes were particularly serious. Prosecutors had charged him with more than 120 counts of sexually abusing 13 children between 2005 and 2019. The youngest victim was one month old.

The defendant admitted the charges during the trial and described them as "disgusting". Police arrested the man at the end of 2021 in a house where he lived with his wife in the town of Wermelskirchen. The defendant was on a video call with work colleagues at the time of the police raid.
