Assassination attempt on Bashar al Assad/ Former Syrian president suspected of
Bashar al-Assad

Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has been in exile in Russia since the fall of his regime last December, has been admitted to a hospital near Moscow in critical condition. According to the Syrian NGO OSDH, he is said to have been poisoned.

His condition is now stable. Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was hospitalized for about ten days after being poisoned, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) revealed. Exiled in Russia since last December and the fall of his regime, he was taken to a hospital near Moscow in "critical condition in intensive care" on September 20.

The former dictator, nicknamed the "Butcher of Damascus", was released on Monday, September 29. "We still do not know who poisoned Bashar al-Assad, but we have learned from a reliable source that it was not just food poisoning, but poisoning," the Syrian NGO said in a statement.

"After being admitted to hospital, Bashar al-Assad was rushed to hospital and placed in critical condition in intensive care at a private hospital in or near the outskirts of Moscow," it added. According to the OSDG, "he was poisoned at home, where he lives in a villa where his movements were severely restricted."

According to the report, the poisoning attempt was allegedly planned by a former Syrian officer. The Observatory claims that Russian authorities "had nothing to do with it", arguing that the assassination attempt may have been orchestrated to discredit the Kremlin, which is "incapable of protecting" its citizens. Neither Russian authorities nor Russian media have commented on the incident.
