The shooting took place near a horse racing track in the Schachen area of the city of Aarau, about 46 kilometers west of Zurich. A party was planned to take place in the area, which was due to last until the early hours of Sunday morning.

Following the incident, authorities cordoned off a large area that includes the racetrack, the city swimming pool and the sports field.
