A passenger ship with 267 people on board, 259 passengers and eight crew members, has capsized at sea, about four nautical miles off the port of Kyrenia, in Northern Cyprus. Six fatalities have been reported so far.
According to the Turkish Interior Ministry, the ship had started taking on water and was in danger of sinking. A large-scale search and rescue operation was launched immediately after the alert.
Four Coast Guard vessels have been dispatched to the area, while the passenger ship Akgunler 3 has also been deployed in the operation. The Coast Guard has been joined by five other vessels and two helicopters. Six Turkish Navy vessels have also been deployed to support the operation.
Kyrenia Mayor Murat Senkul described the situation as “very serious.” In a statement posted on Facebook, he said there could have been around 270 people on board, while Turkish authorities have confirmed the figure of 267 people.
According to Senkul, coastal security teams are conducting a series of rescue operations with small craft, in cooperation with Akgunler Express.
Footage from the scene shows passengers being pulled ashore after the ship capsized. A helicopter and ambulance were also seen at the port, as emergency crews continue to work.
