Taiwan's military has been put on "high alert" today after detecting a Chinese aircraft carrier moving south of the island.
The announcement was made by Taiwan's defense ministry, saying that "the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning has entered the waters near the Bashi Strait and is heading towards the western Pacific".
Official Taipei notes that the military remains "on high alert and even ready to react if necessary."
Beijing, which considers Taiwan a Chinese province, has increased its military and political pressure on the island in recent years.
On the occasion of Taiwan's national day, President Lai Ching-te said on Thursday that they will "resist the annexation" of the island, reports A2.
Beijing, which describes Lai as a "separatist", hit back by warning that "the Taiwanese president's provocations will cause disaster for his people".
