The death toll in the Hajj pilgrimage is increasing every day.

At least 1,000 people have died to date, underscoring the grueling nature of the pilgrimage, which unfolded again in scorching temperatures this year.

A brutal heatwave has seen temperatures reach 50 degrees Celsius at the world's largest Muslim gathering in Saudi Arabia.

Horrific footage shows bodies being covered and left on the road, as some of the pilgrims fell victim to high temperatures, while many others suffered severe heatstroke and had to be rushed to colder, more isolated locations.

The new deaths reported today include 58 people from Egypt, according to an Arab diplomat who provided a summary showing that of the 658 total deaths from that country, 630 were unregistered.

A British imam described the scenes as 'horrifying' and said it was impossible for pilgrims to walk the streets and not see people suffering from the heat.

About 1.8 million pilgrims took part in the hajj this year, 1.6 million of them from abroad, according to Saudi authorities.

Every year tens of thousands of pilgrims attempt to perform the Hajj through irregular routes, as they cannot afford the often costly procedures for official Hajj visas.

The pilgrimage is increasingly affected by climate change, according to a Saudi study published last month that said temperatures in the area where the rituals are performed were rising by 0.4C every decade./ TimesofIsrael
