Outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte will head the NATO military alliance for the next few years after Norway's Jens Stoltenberg steps down.
Rutte will be named the next Secretary General of NATO after Romania agreed to support his candidacy.
Rutte is expected to lead the alliance for a difficult few years as the transatlantic alliance tries to balance Russian aggression in Ukraine.
His appointment was confirmed shortly before a summit to be held in Washington on July 9-11, marking the 75th anniversary of the alliance.
