Eva Kaili

Paolo Valentino – Corriere della Sera

She started as a presenter on a television station in Thessaloniki. The debut in politics, the maneuvers against the former socialist leader Papandreou and the arrival in Strasbourg. Who is the vice president of the European Parliament who shocked the EU

They say that Eva Kaili owes the start of her political career to her resemblance to Eleni Rapti, deputy of Thessaloniki for "Nea Dimokratia", the conservative party.

Indeed, it was precisely in the desperate search for a new face in the 2004 elections that the local leaders of Pasok focused their attention on the young journalist, well-known presenter of "Mega Channel", who studied architecture, international relations and economy, blonde just like Rapti.

The first of the non-chosen

But not everything went well. Kaili came first in the 2004 elections in Thessaloniki, but failed to win a seat in Parliament.

The reason, simple, Georgios Papandreou, who was elected in both Thessaloniki and Patra, chose Thessaloniki leaving out Eva Kaili.

Because according to the electoral law, the leader of the Papandreou party can run in several constituencies and engage only in one constituency after the election results have been announced.

And maybe that's where her enmity towards Papandreou started. Kaili most certainly never forgot this choice for him. Three years later she entered the Greek parliament again for Pasok.

Kaili became a kind of bulwark against the socialist leader, who has always distrusted her.

Dirty game

But we can say that Kaili was the final cause of Papandreou's downfall.

It happened in 2011, when at the height of the Greek crisis, the Socialist Prime Minister decided to accept the austerity measures imposed by the EU, under pressure from Merkel and Sarkozy, but declared that he wanted to submit them to a referendum.

After calling him to the Nice summit, Sarkozy, but above all the president of the Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, played dirty, persuading the Greek finance minister, Evangelos Venizelos, to rebel and organize a revolt within the party. So it was.

Papandreou had only 2 majority votes in the Parliament, but before the vote was taken to announce the referendum, he received a letter from a deputy. "Above personal or party interest, I must decide the national one. I will vote against you".

The signature was that of Eva Kaili, immediately imitated by two other colleagues. Papandreou gave up on the referendum and resigned a few days later.

Vote against Macedonia

Of all Kaili's positions in conflict with his party, he remains famously ultra-nationalist against the agreement that ended the long battle between Greece and North Macedonia, with which Athens recognized the right of the latter to define itself as such.

"An irreparable damage to the history of Macedonia (in the sense of the Greek region) and to the Greeks," said the socialist deputy of that time.

The Trojan horse

Nikos Androulakis, the leader of what little is left of Pasok, who meanwhile expelled the MEP under charges in Brussels, described Kail as the "Trojan horse" of the conservative government within the socialist party.

And I mention the last episode of the wiretapping scandal, commissioned by the government against the opposition, the authentic Greek Watergate.

Kaili, instead of condemning them, said they were nothing new or strange, declassifying them as trivial.

Ubiquitous

The transition to European politics was made in 2014 with the elections to the European Parliament, followed by reconfirmation in 2019 with the ascension to the Presidency of the Assembly.

In Brussels and Strasbourg, Kaili seemed ubiquitous, active in commissions, evaluation bodies, parliamentary delegations, intergroups, special missions, etc.

Always ready in her speeches to support noble causes, such as human rights or the fight against corruption.

Her strong point was digital issues and high technology, a few days ago she explained that the EU should do much more to help citizens acquire certain digital skills".

"College of Defense" of Emirs

Then, or perhaps before, came Katari, the irresistible gentleness of being.

Little by little, Kaili became the well-known head of the "defense college" of the Emirates in the Parliament of Strasbourg.

The speech last November 21 was surreal, when the plenary voted a resolution that "condemns the death of thousands of migrant workers".

Kaili, instead, became a voice for Qatar, which he described as a "country at the forefront of workers' rights", perhaps confusing the latter with those killed at work.

Then, ten days ago, she literally walked into the Justice Committee, of which she is not a member, to vote for the liberalization of Schengen entry visas for Qatari citizens.

Again, when Qatar had postponed at the last moment the trip of the Parliamentary Delegation for relations with the Arabian Peninsula, which wanted to visit the World Cup premises and verify the changes in the labor legislation, announced by the leaders of Doha, Kaili had left alone. in the Emirates.

She was received there with great fanfare, she had praised the reforms of the regime, claiming to represent 500 million Europeans.

As Green MP Hannah Neumann, who heads the delegation, commented, “I felt something was happening behind my back.

Qatar did not invite the parliamentarians, knowing they would have a more balanced position, and they invited him knowing what he meant.

The suitcase and the father

The credits see a suitcase full of banknotes, 600 thousand euros, awkwardly taken by a father to the apartment where the honorable member lived with her Italian companion, Francesco Giorgi.

The beautiful Eva and the fit and friendly sailing instructor were a "fascinating couple", according to a former socialite colleague.

Giorgi is also passionate about human rights and he is now under arrest.

Beautiful and damned? The presumption of innocence is fine, but Socialist MEP Eva Kaili needs more than a few explanations.
