A cafe in Venice's famous St. Mark's Square turned into a "battlefield" when a dispute between a waiter and a member of a group of tourists turned ugly and the situation got out of hand.

Footage published by Italy's 'Corriere del Veneto' shows the fight that broke out at Caffè Chioggia between waiters and foreign customers.

The video was filmed last week by an English-speaking eyewitness, who can be heard shouting "What's going on?".

At least seven waiters are said to have been involved in the fight with the group of four tourists, during which one man tried to defend himself by holding a chair as a "shield".

In footage circulating online, however, not all waiters appear to be taking part in the brawl, instead some appear to be trying more to calm spirits.

"I don't think we have ever seen scenes like this in Piazza San Marco - comments the municipal councilor, Sebastiano Costalonga - despite the rudeness of some tourists who have some behavior that is really beyond the limits, nothing like this should happen again". The embarrassment and sensation that was created around the incident does not seem to contradict it.

The fight started over using the toilet. The staff has asked tourists to respect the queue. Then came a second request to wait in line (since the tourists had not consumed anything in the cafe) and from there a quick fight started.

The place where the incident took place makes it unique, but in Venice it is not an isolated event, Italian media write. The cafe fight in Piazza San Marco is the emblem of the low level that increasingly characterizes its visitors. According to residents, for some time Venice has seen all kinds of things from mass tourism, however municipal officials say that the behavior of the cafe staff was ugly and harms Venice's tourism.
