The new head of NATO, Mark Rutte, has expressed calm about Donald Trump if the latter is elected President of the USA, given his statements and attitude towards the military alliance.
Speaking from London after meeting with British Prime Minister Starmer and Ukrainian President Zelensky, Rutte said that Donald Trump needs NATO.
In an interview with "The Guardian", he insisted that he is not worried about Donald Trump, saying that the latter "wants to protect the USA".
Rutte argued that this requires being part of NATO, because "without membership he is alone and in a harsh and uncompromising world Trump needs the alliance".
In this way, the new head of NATO also gave an answer to Donald Trump, since the latter has always been skeptical of the military alliance with the argument that the US pays more than other member states. Even during his presidency in 2018, Donald Trump had considered leaving the alliance, as reported by American media.
However, now that Trump is running for President again, he has said that the US will stay in NATO as long as European countries do not benefit from the high amounts of US defense spending.
As for the contribution that each NATO member state makes, Rutte also said that defense spending in Europe will have to increase.
Currently, the member countries provide NATO with 2% of their Gross Domestic Product.
"It is clearly not enough, because now we can look at the gaps we have, the objectives we want and we need to do more", said Mark Rutte.
