The United States has suspended visa approvals for nearly all citizens holding Palestinian passports, The New York Times reported on Sunday, citing unidentified officials.

The new restrictions go beyond measures previously imposed by the Trump administration on visitors from Gaza. The move will reportedly prevent Palestinians from traveling to the United States for medical treatment, university studies or business purposes.

The US State Department announced two weeks ago that it had suspended all visitor visas for individuals from Gaza while it conducts a “full and thorough review.” The decision has been condemned by pro-Palestinian organizations.

On Friday, ahead of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in September, the United States will also begin denying and revoking visas for representatives of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA), the State Department confirmed.

Under an agreement that the United States has as host country for the UN in New York, it is not allowed to withhold visas for officials attending the General Assembly. However, the State Department stressed that it is respecting the agreement by allowing only the Palestinian mission to attend the meeting.

"The Trump administration has been clear: it is in our national interest to hold the PLO and the PA accountable for failing to honor their commitments and undermining prospects for peace," the State Department said in a statement.

The new move is seen as another step by the Trump administration toward aligning itself with Israel's right-wing government, which strongly opposes the creation of a Palestinian state. Reporting by Jason Burke also contributed to this story.
