US prepares major military withdrawal from Europe

The United States is preparing to significantly reduce its military presence in Europe, faster than NATO allies had anticipated and without a significant transition period, Welt am Sonntag reports.

According to a US Defense Department official, the changes will be included in a proposal that the Pentagon is expected to present during the upcoming NATO force generation conference, scheduled for June.

The official said Washington aims to give allies the clarity needed to move towards a model where European countries take primary responsibility for the continent's conventional defense.

The approach reflects a long-standing demand by US President Donald Trump for European NATO members. After his return to the White House in January 2025, this policy has been incorporated into US national security and defense strategies.

Washington's new strategic logic is based on the idea that the United States cannot simultaneously prepare for major conflicts on several fronts. For this reason, the focus has shifted to China and the Indo-Pacific region, while Europe is expected to take more responsibility for containing Russia.

According to the report, European allies expected any withdrawal of US forces to be gradual and coordinated with NATO. However, the current proposal does not foresee a long adjustment period.

At a recent meeting in Brussels, the Pentagon's senior defense policy adviser, Alexander Velez-Green, informed allies of Washington's intention to partially reduce its contribution to NATO's joint deterrence structure.

According to the German magazine Der Spiegel, the plans include reducing the number of US fighter jets stationed in Europe by about a third.

The biggest reductions are expected to affect the NATO Force Model, the Alliance's rapid response system, which defines the number of troops that can be deployed within 10 to 30 days and the capacity to mobilize up to 800,000 soldiers within six months.

The cuts could include strategic bombers, long-range strike capabilities, naval forces and aerial refueling aircraft.
