The United States will no longer chair the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG), leaving this role to Germany and the United Kingdom, Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans announced.

According to him, it is an important step that the Europeans are taking on more responsibility, while the US still remains part of the group. The UDCG, also known as the Ramstein Group, consists of 57 countries, including all members of NATO and the EU, and was established to coordinate military assistance to Ukraine.

This move comes amid signals of a reduced US role in NATO and the possibility of a withdrawal of American troops from Europe, where around 100,000 soldiers are currently stationed.

Brekelmans called for close transatlantic cooperation whether the US chooses to refocus resources towards the Indo-Pacific or domestically, stressing that maintaining American commitment to NATO remains essential for Europe's security.
