USA: North Korea develops program that produces biological weapons

The US claims that North Korea is trying to produce biological weapons using the CRISPR gene-editing method.

The US Department of State has published the 2024 report on "Agreements and commitments for the control, prevention of the spread of weapons and disarmament".

The report warns that "North Korea uses technologies that ensure the modification and alteration of genes such as CRISPR and that it is producing biological weapons."

"North Korea is cooperating with other countries to supply equipment and products," says the report, which recalls that the Pyongyang government is a party to the Biological Weapons Convention, which prohibits the production and use of biological weapons.

A 2023 report by the US-based think-tank Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) also claimed that North Korea has chemical and biological weapons.

The first multilateral Convention on Biological Weapons presented by Great Britain, which was signed in 1972 and entered into force in 1975, provides for the development, production, stockpiling of bacteriological and poison weapons and their destruction.

Among the parties to the convention that prohibits the production of biological weapons are 183 countries, including Turkey.
