The world was on the brink of a major clash between Russia and the United States in the Atlantic waters after Washington seized a Russian-flagged tanker that was being escorted by a Russian submarine.
The Americans had been tracking the Russian ship for more than two weeks across the Atlantic as part of a US "blockade" of Venezuelan oil exports, two US officials told Reuters.
This appears to be the first time in recent memory that the US military has seized a Russian-flagged vessel. The operation took place after the tanker, originally known as the Bella-1, broke through a US naval blockade of sanctioned tankers in the Caribbean and resisted US Coast Guard attempts to board it. The attempted seizure was first reported by Reuters.
In a post on X, the US military's European Command said the Trump administration had seized the ship for violating US sanctions. "The blockade of sanctioned and illegal Venezuelan oil remains in FULL EFFECT - everywhere in the world," US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in response to that post.

U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Wednesday's operation near Iceland was being conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard and the military. The officials said Russian military vessels were in the general vicinity of the operation, including a Russian submarine.
It was not clear how close the ships were to the operation, but there were no indications of a confrontation between US and Russian military forces. Russian state media RT published an image of a helicopter hovering near the ship.

The seizure came just days after US special forces entered Caracas before dawn on Saturday in a deadly raid to capture President Nicolas Maduro and take him to the United States. The US military handed him over to federal authorities for prosecution on charges including alleged drug trafficking. It was not clear where exactly the ship would now go, but sources said it was likely to enter British territorial waters.
The US Coast Guard first tried to stop the ship last month, but it refused to board. It has since been registered under the Russian flag and renamed the Marinera. The ship is the latest tanker targeted by the US Coast Guard since the start of US President Donald Trump's pressure campaign against Venezuela.
Separately, the U.S. Coast Guard has also detained another Venezuelan-linked tanker in Latin American waters, U.S. officials told Reuters on Wednesday, as the United States continues to enforce its blockade of ships sanctioned by Venezuela. The sources told Reuters the vessel was the Panamanian-flagged supertanker M Sophia, which is under sanctions.
It had departed Venezuelan waters in early January as part of a fleet of ships transporting Venezuelan oil to China in "dark mode," or with its transponder turned off, according to shipping records and sources.
