US Senator Marco Rubio has reacted for the first time after being chosen by President Donald Trump for the post of Secretary of State.

Through a message, Rubio says that he is honored for the trust that Trump has given him and that he will work to "realize his foreign policy".

He says he will focus on bringing "peace through force" and always putting the interests of Americans "above everything else."

Rubio's message:

Leading the US State Department is a tremendous responsibility, and I am honored by the trust that President Trump has placed in me. As Secretary of State, I will work every day to implement his foreign policy agenda.

Under the leadership of President Trump we will bring peace through strength and we will always put Americans and America's interests above all else. I look forward to winning the support of my colleagues in the US Senate so that the President has his national security and foreign policy team in place when he takes office on January 20.
