A Russian court has sentenced Alsu Kurmasheva for spreading false information about the Russian military to six and a half years in prison, following a secret trial, according to court documents and officials.

Kurmasheva has dual Citizenship, Russian and American citizenship, and is a journalist for Radio Free Europe in Prague.

The sentence in the Kazan court was issued on Friday, July 19, the same day a Russian court in Yekateringburg sentenced Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich to 16 years in prison on espionage charges. The United States said gershkovich's case was politically motivated.

Kurmasheva, a journalist with Radio Free Europe's Tatar-Bashkir Service, was convicted of "spreading false information" about the military, according to information published on the Tatarstan Supreme Court website. Court spokeswoman Natalya Loseva confirmed to The Associated Press that Kurmasheva was sentenced to six and a half years in prison in the case, which is classified as secret, giving no details about the nature of the charges against her.

Asked about the decision, REL President Stephen Capus condemned the trial and sentence of Kurmasheva, calling it a "mockery of justice". He said the only "just outcome for Alsun is her immediate release from prison."

"This American citizen, our beloved colleague, must be reunited with her family," Capus said in a statement to the AP.

Kurmasheva has been detained by Russian authorities since October 2014 on the grounds that he failed to register as a "foreign agent".

Such registration is mandatory under a Russian law that aims to target journalists, civil society activists and those who do not hold similar positions with power.

Radio Free Europe and the U.S. government said the charges against her were in retaliation for her work as a journalist for REL at the company's headquarters in Prague.
