The United States has condemned the violent incidents that have occurred in recent days in northern Kosovo, a spokesperson for the US State Department told VOA.
"The use of explosives is never an acceptable method of protest and endangers the lives of innocent people," the spokesman said.
He added that "the United States continues to call on Kosovo and Serbia to exercise restraint and avoid any action or statement that would further escalate tensions."
These comments come after several incidents have been recorded in the north of Kosovo since December 6, including shootings, throwing of hand grenades and grenades - but without consequences for people.
On December 6, "masked" groups and persons damaged the offices of the municipal election commissions in North Mitrovica and Zubin Potok. These incidents happened at the time when the Kosovo Police were escorting the election officials to their offices, while the authorities are continuing preparations for the local elections in the north, set for December 18.
Even in the following days, explosions and other incidents were recorded. Kosovo authorities have blamed "criminal gangs" that are "financed and directed" by Serbia for the recent incidents.
Due to the created situation, the Police announced an increase in presence in the north of Kosovo. After the incidents in the north, the US called for the postponement of the elections, as it said that there are currently no conditions for holding them.
The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has stated that after accepting the assessments of the security bodies, she will consult with the political parties to postpone or not hold the elections in North Mitrovica, Zubin Potok, Zveçan and Leposaviq.
Elections in the north were announced after Serbian representatives left Kosovo's institutions in November. They resigned due to opposition to a decision of the Government of Kosovo regarding the re-registration of cars with illegal license plates, issued by Serbia.
