One of the vice-presidents of the European Parliament was arrested this Friday on charges of corruption, as part of an investigation into the alleged lobbying of the World Cup host country, Qatar.

According to what DailyMail writes, Greek socialist MEP Eva Kaili, 44, was arrested this Friday evening by the Belgian police. She is one of the 14 vice-presidents of the European Parliament.

Kaili is a member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and was voted as vice president in January 2022. She is an MEP since 2014.

Earlier, today, 4 other people were arrested, among them Kaili's partner, 53-year-old Luca Visentini. The earlier arrests were announced by the Belgian Federal Prosecutor. The investigations started after the discovery of 600,000 euros in cash, in 16 different addresses in Brussels.

Prosecutors did not specify the identity of the suspects or the state involved in this scandal, saying only that it was a 'Gulf' state. The Belgian authorities suspect that one of the countries of the Gulf has influenced the economic and political decisions of the parliament for several months.

However, the DailyMail writes that a source close to the matter confirmed press reports that the investigation is focused on Qatar's alleged attempts to bribe an Italian socialist, who was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2019.
