At least 14 people were arrested in Turkey for suspected negligence in connection with buildings that collapsed after the earthquake in the southern provinces, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

Also, prosecutors are seeking the arrest of 33 other people in the city of Dijarbakır accused of being responsible for "construction defects", such as the removal of concrete columns to free up space.

"Most of the arrested were contractors. "One of them was caught at the Istanbul airport while trying to leave for Montenegro," said "Anadolu".

Meanwhile, around 25,000 victims were registered after the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said at least 20,665 people died and 80,052 others were injured by the two strong earthquakes that struck the southern part of the country.

Syria counts so far over 3,553 victims.

The magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes, centered in Kahramanmaraş province, affected more than 13 million people in 10 provinces, including Adana, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye and Sanlıurfa provinces.

Minister Koca said that "about 20,000 people were rescued from the ruins of destroyed buildings and have been moved to other provinces through air, land and sea transport".

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said in a statement that at least 159,146 search and rescue personnel were working on the ground.

AFAD also announced that 7,716 personnel from foreign countries were also sent to the disaster area.

The Foreign Ministry announced that 97 countries have offered assistance and that search and rescue teams from 61 countries are currently continuing their efforts on the ground.
