The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has warned that the mercenaries of the Russian group, Wagner, are working with Serbian paramilitaries to smuggle weapons and military uniforms without emblems into Kosovo.
In an interview for The Telegraph, Osmani said that this operation aims to create the ground for a possible hybrid attack by Serbia to take control of the territory of Kosovo.
These alleged preparations by Serbia draw parallels with the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, when Russian soldiers, wearing uniforms without insignia, prepared the way for the takeover of the Ukrainian peninsula from Moscow.
"They are bringing weapons and uniforms, but they are not part of the Serbian army. Serbia wants to achieve its goals, without calling it a military operation", said Osmani.
According to her, Serbia's objective is "to prepare the situation for a possible annexation - not through a traditional military operation, but through a kind of hybrid attack".
According to Osmani, Belgrade is continuing to increase tensions in the region in cooperation with Wagner, who has recently launched a campaign to recruit Serbs for the war in Ukraine.
The President of Kosovo said that the hidden strategy for smuggling weapons and ammunition has been developing for at least the last six months. According to Osman, this strategy has the "same" goal as the one used by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, when he illegally annexed Crimea.
"If you look at what Putin did in 2014, it's exactly the same. First, he instrumentalized the Russians living there, then he created fake operations, and then he sent these paramilitary groups. There are clear indications that Serbian paramilitary groups are planning and organizing this [along with Wagner]. What was the number of them who were at the border or inside [the territory of Kosovo], is something that is still being investigated", said President Osmani.
According to the head of state of Kosovo, the goals are completely aggressive.
"They dig trenches and military-style barricades, the kind that can be used to fight," she said.
Osmani said that despite NATO's military presence in Kosovo - through the KFOR mission - it does not mean that Serbia will not try to act like Russia, which launched the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
"I'm not saying that he [Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic] will do it, but I'm saying that we must be ready to prevent such a scenario."
Kosovo officials have said earlier that in the north of Kosovo there may be involvement of persons who have direct or indirect connections with Wagner's mercenaries. Kosovo has also accused Russia of encouraging Serbia to increase tensions with Kosovo. Moscow has denied these accusations of Pristina./DW
