Rishi Sunak will officially become the Prime Minister of Great Britain this morning after winning the race for the leadership of the Conservative Party. Sunak will travel today to Buckingham Palace, where King Charles will formally hand him the post of Prime Minister after Liz Truss resigns.
At 09:00 local time, Truss will hold a final cabinet meeting, which will then be followed by handing in his resignation to the king. Sunak is the first Indian Prime Minister in Britain and at the same time the youngest Prime Minister in more than a century, aged 42.
Sunak will take up the post at a time when the UK is facing major economic challenges.
Sunak has yet to unveil any detailed plans to revive the country's economy, except during his summer campaign to be elected Conservative leader against Liz Truss.
Sunak will be the fourth prime minister in a row, after Theresa May, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, to take power without a general election.
But on the other hand, the opposition has repeated the call to enter general elections, arguing that Sunak does not have a democratic mandate to become prime minister.
The next general election will not be held until at least 2024, after the Conservatives won a landslide majority in the last one in 2019.
Sunak is not obliged to call an early election under the UK's parliamentary political system.
