Rishi Sunak has won the race in the Conservative Party of Britain, becoming the new prime minister of the country.

He will become the first British Prime Minister of Indian origin and will lead Britain, a country that is facing major economic challenges.

His opponent, Penny Mordaunt, withdrew from the race for leader of the party and leadership of the Government.

"These are unprecedented times. I have made the decision to withdraw from the race for the good of the state," she wrote in a tweet.

Sunak, 42, became known to the British public during the government of Boris Johnson, who appointed him to the post of finance minister at the time when Britain recorded its first cases of coronavirus.

"I have served as your chancellor, helping to steer our economy through the most difficult times," Sunak said in a statement on Sunday.

"The challenges we are facing now are even greater. But the possibilities - if we make the right choice - are phenomenal," he added.

Likewise, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson withdrew from the race for Prime Minister on October 23.

Johnson said he was withdrawing from the race despite having enough support in the Conservative Party to continue the race, but said at this time the party, as well as the country, needed unity.

According to party rules, the winning candidate must secure the support of 100 conservative legislators, REL reports. After withdrawing from the race, Mordaunt offered her support to Sunaku.
