The toll from the devastating double earthquake that hit Venezuela is getting worse by the hour.

The number of confirmed deaths has reached 235, the injured are over 4,300, while more than 42,000 people are still missing. Rescue teams continue to dig through the rubble in Caracas and in La Guaira, one of the worst-hit areas.

Two earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 hit the country overnight between Wednesday and Thursday, just 40 seconds apart.

Many people are suspected to have lost their lives, while others have been left homeless or are afraid to stay in damaged and unsafe buildings, spending the night on the streets after the disaster.

Both earthquakes were shallow, the first having its epicenter at a depth of 20.3 kilometers below the earth's surface, while the second at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Several countries have pledged aid for the rescue efforts, while the United States has announced $150 million in aid. The US military is sending transport ships and aircraft to support search and rescue teams and enable “rapid relief operations,” a statement said. Washington has authorized transactions to Venezuela that are usually blocked by sanctions, provided they are related to “humanitarian relief operations.”

More than 250 buildings were damaged or destroyed. Venezuela's main international airport, in Maiquetía, on the outskirts of Caracas, has been closed due to severe damage, the country's interim president announced.
