Putin's soldiers have faced the consequences of radiation exposure after opening tents in a forest near the Chernobyl nuclear plant where the nuclear disaster occurred.

Ukrainians living near Chernobyl have told how they warned their Russian enemies of the dangers, despite arriving as invaders a year ago. However, they have also been seen fishing in the cooling chambers of the reactor.

According to reports, Russian soldiers spent about two weeks near the nuclear reactor in March last year. The reactor in question exploded 37 years ago causing the nuclear material to spread into the environment.

Ukrainians now report that Putin's men crossed from Belarus and set up defensive positions in the Red Forest, which got its name from the color the trees turned after the nuclear disaster.

Some say the Russians chose the area on purpose because they knew they wouldn't be hit by Ukrainian shells. Russian soldiers spent two weeks in an area 6 miles from nuclear reactor No. 4, where they slept, ate and drank.

"This is the most dangerous place in the special zone because there is nuclear waste underground," Oksana Pyshna told the Sunday Times.

Two weeks later, the Russians left to launch the failed attack on Kiev in early April, leaving Chernobyl in its years-long lull.
