Blinken and Macron on Ukraine's counteroffensive: It could last for months

Ukraine's allies say it is still too early to say what direction the Ukrainian counteroffensive, which has only been under way for a few days, is taking.

Despite the encouraging messages, the fear of losing on both sides is great.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is clear in his position.

"Ukraine's success in this counteroffensive will do two things: it will strengthen its position at the negotiating table, and it may have the effect of forcing President Putin to focus on dialogue and end the war he started," Blinken said.

While French President Emmanuel Macron, who has hosted the leaders of Germany and Poland in Paris, says that the initiative of the Ukrainian side could last for weeks.

"The counter-offensive has been carefully prepared by an army of leaders who have demonstrated their determination, courage and tactical and organizational skills for more than a year. That's why I think this offensive will take weeks, if not months," Macron said.

While Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that Ukraine's counter-offensive is failing, claiming that Kiev's troops have lost 25 to 30 percent of military vehicles supplied by Western countries since the start of their efforts to retake lands occupied by Moscow forces.

Putin has blamed Ukraine for the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam, which he said was caused by Kiev's bombing of the structure with US-made HIMARS missile systems.

Also, Putin has announced that no additional conscripted soldiers will be sent to the "special military operation" area as he calls it, reports Al Jazeera.

"We have recruited more than 150,000 contract fighters, 156,000 volunteers. The Ministry of Defense says there is no need for additional mobilization. People are standing up with their own will to defend the Motherland," Putin emphasized while pointing out that the West is violating several international acts by continuing to supply Ukraine with weapons.
