Putin: US sanctions will have no effect. If we are attacked with Tomahawk

Russian President Vladimir Putin has given his first direct response to US sanctions announced against Russia on Wednesday.

Putin says the sanctions will not affect Russia's economy (a claim widely disputed by most analysts), but described them as an "unfriendly act" that does not strengthen relations with the US, according to Russian state media TASS.

The sanctions are an attempt to put pressure on Russia, Putin says, adding that "dialogue is always better than war."

He says Russia will never succumb to pressure from outside.

Putin stressed that in the event of Tomahawk missile attacks on Russian territory, Moscow's response will be powerful, serious and could even be considered "destructive."

In his speech to the Russian Geographical Society in Moscow, Putin says that replacing Russian oil on the global market will take time and lead to price increases.

Discussing the canceled summit with Donald Trump in Budapest, Putin says the meeting was proposed by the US.

He adds that Trump, in his comments at the White House yesterday, most likely meant to say that the summit had been "postponed."

Russia wants to continue dialogue with the US as the two countries have many areas for cooperation, Putin adds.

This warning comes as the US has imposed new sanctions on Russia, aiming to exert pressure on Moscow.

However, Putin added that "no self-respecting country acts under pressure," underlining Russia's firm stance in the face of these measures.

However, the first impact of the large and harsh American sanctions is being felt.

China's state-owned oil giants - PetroChina, Sinopec, CNOOC and Zhenhua Oil - have halted or reduced their offshore purchases of Russian oil following new US sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil, fearing secondary penalties.
