One of the most famous kisses in history was between Communist leader Erich Honecker and Soviet Leonid Brezhnev. The event took place during the 30th anniversary of the German Democratic Republic in 1979.
The leaders who decided the fate of half of Europe met symbolically in front of the Berlin Wall. Leonid Brezhnev was invited by the representative of the communist government in the GDR, Eric Honecker, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of East Germany.
After they ascended the official podium together and the Soviet leader made his speech, he turned to Eric Honecker, hugged him, and then, to the surprise of the whole world and the delight of photojournalists, the two leaders kissed each other for a long time.
The moment is perfectly captured by photographer Regis Bossu, Erich Ernst Paul Honecker was the General Secretary of the Socialist Party of Germany.
From a very young age, Erich, although raised in a fascist political system, was forced by his father to support communism. This is because his father was part of a communist party before the start of the Second World War, while working as a miner, reports abcnews.al.
At the age of only 14, Erich joined the communist youth movement and carried out many illegal activities that were pro-communist. In 1935 he was captured by the Gestapo (secret police) and sentenced to 10 years of hard labor for all his crimes against the Nazi party.
In 1945, when the Soviet army invaded Germany, he was released and described as a true communist who understood the socialist aspect of communism, despite being a Westerner.
He was loved by the Soviets for the way he governed East Germany, as well as the fact that he made East Germany one of the most prosperous areas of the Eastern bloc.
For communist political leaders, this kiss was a formality. When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, Soviet artist Dmitry Vrubel decided to paint a reinterpretation of the two kissing.
The graffiti on the ruins of the wall was called by the artist "Kiss of Death", but on the edge of the picture it is written: God help me to survive this mortal love."/ Historyofyesterday
