Two people have been arrested in Turkey in connection with the murder of a Bulgarian border policeman, announced the director of the National Investigative Service of Bulgaria, Borislav Sarafov.

The policeman was shot dead while on patrol near Bulgaria's border with Turkey.

Sarafov said that according to the first information, the arrested persons are not citizens of Turkey. He said that one was the handyman and the second person had helped in this incident.

The Bulgarian authorities have described the case as unprecedented and announced that they will take "harsh measures" to fight illegal migration.

Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry Secretary, Petar Todorov, said the policeman killed was Border Police Sergeant Petar Bachvarov.

Bulgaria said that the killing of the policeman happened on November 7, as the flow of people trying to enter the European Union states illegally has increased.

This is not the first incident that has resulted in the killing of border officials. In August of this year, two Bulgarian policemen were killed during an accident in Burgas, while they were following a bus with illegal migrants.

According to the data of the Bulgarian Ministry of the Interior, from the beginning of the year until September, 12,740 illegal migrants who tried to enter Bulgaria illegally were detained. This figure represents an increase of more than two times compared to the number of migrants detained last year.
