President Donald Trump is trying to persuade Ukraine to accept the terms of the peace plan and aims to reach an agreement in principle by Christmas. His dissatisfaction is evident, not only with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but also with European countries, which he says are “talking a lot and delivering little.”

However, Trump also has other important issues to deal with.

In recent days, he and his spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, have been asked about the war in Ukraine, but the attention of American journalists has been mainly on the economy and the situation in Venezuela.

"We'll see what happens. We're working to see if we can get a deal," Trump said. He also acknowledged that the process is complicated, involving multiple parties and difficult issues of territorial division.

Recently, attention has also shifted to Syria.

According to former US diplomat Richard Haass, it remains unclear what decisions Trump will make if efforts for a peaceful solution continue to fail.

Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, along with his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are expected to meet European leaders and President Zelensky tomorrow, December 15, in Berlin.

According to sources, the two envoys have reported to Trump that some of the issues are closer to resolution and that Zelensky's recent statements indicate a willingness to ask citizens through a referendum on a peace agreement, which would also include giving up some territories.

A White House source said Trump believes there is a real chance for peace and that he trusts the people he has sent to negotiate. Even after presenting an initial 28-point plan, Trump has shown that he supports any effort aimed at reaching an agreement.

Zelensky has stated that Russia seeks to take over the entire Donbas region, which Ukraine does not accept.

According to him, the Ukrainian people should decide on this issue themselves, whether through elections or a referendum. Meanwhile, the majority of Ukrainians continue to be against the handover of Donbass.

However, Trump has claimed that a poll shows that a majority of Ukrainians want an end to the war, as thousands of lives are lost every week. In other statements, Trump has suggested that Ukraine could soon lose the part of Donbas it still controls and has stressed that the main obstacle to a deal is Zelensky himself, while his inner circle, according to Trump, is more open to the proposal.

Trump wants to be remembered as the president who ended the war in Ukraine as part of his political legacy. He and his aides also see opportunities for economic gains associated with post-war reconstruction.

On the other hand, the White House spokeswoman spoke of Trump's dissatisfaction with the long time spent in talks with Ukraine, Russia and European countries. She emphasized that the US government has spent many hours on these efforts, while the president is facing strong criticism at home over the economy and healthcare.

The results of several local elections in the United States have increased concerns within the Republican Party, ahead of the midterm elections in 2026.

Trump is also unhappy with opposition within his own party to redistricting. Meanwhile, his aides are urging him to focus more on the economy and domestic issues than on conflicts abroad.
