43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed risked his life to save civilians

A citizen who became a hero during the shooting rampage at Bondi Beach in Sydney was shot and is in hospital awaiting surgery, his family has announced.

Shocking footage posted on social media shows the moment a man approaches one of the gunmen from behind as he fires at fleeing citizens. He knocks the gunman to the ground and snatches the gun from his hands, temporarily halting the attack.

After disarming him, the man points the gun at the attacker, who crawls away and runs towards a second attacker who continues to shoot at the crowd.

Immediately after this, the citizen raises his hands up to identify himself as harmless to the police force, places the weapon on the ground, and leaves the scene.

Speaking to Australian media outlet 7NEWS, a relative of his, Mustafa, revealed that the hero is his cousin, Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, a father of two.

According to him, Ahmed had no experience with firearms and happened to be near the scene when he decided to intervene to save others.

In the chaos that ensued, he was shot twice and is currently hospitalized.

"He is in the hospital and we still don't know his exact condition. We hope he is well. He is a hero, 100 percent," Mustafa said.

The attack on Bondi Beach has caused 11 casualties and shocked public opinion in Australia, while authorities continue investigations into the circumstances and motives of the event.
