Pro-Palestinian protests, mass arrests at American universities (VIDEO)
Pro-Palestinian protests spread to American universities

Several universities in the United States are facing daily pro-Palestinian protests. The students are demonstrating against the war between Israel and Hamas and demanding that humanitarian aid be allowed to reach Gaza. And while over 100 students and demonstrators have been arrested, it seems that the protests are not dying down.

Protesters joined students at several universities, including Columbia, Yale and New York University, as they held up slogans and chanted "Free, free Palestine." Police intervened violently at several US colleges to arrest protesters, mainly at Columbia University where tensions remain high and classes have been cancelled.

House Speaker Mike Johnson faced jeers from pro-Palestinian protesters during a visit to the Columbia University campus, but called for the university's president to resign.

Johnson said Columbia University had failed to act to restore order on campus and failed to protect Jewish students amid concerns about anti-Semitism on and around campus.

"This is dangerous. We respect free speech, we respect diversity of ideas, but there is a way to do it in a legal way and this is not what it is. My message to the students inside the camp is to go back to the classroom and stop the nonsense.”

Mike Johnson also floated the idea of calling in National Guard troops, something New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she has no plans to do.

American university officials are now negotiating with protest leaders over the size of the camps set up outside their campuses, and talks are expected to continue. Students have also been allowed to choose to take classes online due to security concerns.

Camps have also been set up at a number of other universities, including the New School in Florida, the University of Michigan and the University of Rochester in New York State.

Pro-Palestinian groups have called on universities to end investments in companies that support or benefit from Israel's military actions in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Meanwhile, the death toll in Gaza is mounting and there is no sign that the war between Israel and Hamas will end anytime soon.
