Prosecutor who prosecuted Milosevic: Possible sentencing of former KLA leaders
Geoffrey Nice

Geoffrey Nice, one of the leading prosecutors who once prosecuted the butcher of the Balkans, Slobodan Milosevic, has assessed that the eventual conviction of former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague would be an extremely heavy burden for the country.

"It would be a burden for a state to live with such a sentence," he said in an interview with Kanal 10, adding that Kosovo, as a state that is still in an early stage of development, would find it extremely difficult to shoulder such a sentence.

Asked about the Specialized Prosecution Office's request that Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi be sentenced to 45 years in prison each, Nice described such a thing as very strange and at the same time surprising.

"I find it a pretty strange request from the prosecution considering the sentences that have been handed down for more serious crimes, a surprising request I would say," he added.

The Kosovo Specialist Chambers heard the final arguments of the former KLA leaders on Wednesday. Each of them insisted that they felt completely innocent.

They also described the Special Prosecutor's Office's accusations as unfounded and unfair.
