The U.S. Navy is seeking to develop an air-launched, ship-killing missile at supersonic speeds, according to budget justification documents obtained by Breaking Defense.
Called HALO (Hypersonic Air-Launched Offensive Anti-Area Warfare Weapon), the missile could require a $92 million research and development budget starting next year.
A $56 million budget for a similar effort was requested last year, but the service failed to get the green light for the program.
According to budget documents, HALO will have a higher speed and wider range than existing anti-ship weapons systems.
The claim says this system will have a "superior ability to fight land and sea targets" to address advanced threats and allow service to operate in a harsh environment.
Once developed, the U.S. Navy plans to put the technology into service by 2028.
