Warsaw fears that Russia on the border of its Kaliningrad exclave could stage a wave of migrants. The airport there currently allows flights from the Middle East and North Africa, it said.

The Polish government will erect a fence along the border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad to prevent illegal border crossings. This decision, which was communicated in Warsaw by Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, is related to fears within the government that Russia could stage a wave of migrants at the border. Kaliningrad borders Lithuania and Poland, both EU and NATO members.

Migration from the Middle East and North Africa?

"The airport in Kaliningrad now allows flights from the Middle East and North Africa. I have decided to take measures to increase security at the Polish borders", Blaszczak told reporters and added that the work on the temporary blocking of the 210 km border segment will start within the day of this statement.

According to Blaszczak, the border complex will consist of three parallel fences with barbed wire at a height of 2.5 meters and a width of three meters and will have the necessary electronic equipment.

Poland in September last year erected a five-meter-high concrete wall along the border with Belarus and created a zone three kilometers wide and 400 kilometers long, the entrance of which is blocked to all those who are not residents of Poland, even for employees of non-governmental organizations and journalists.

Every day dozens of people try to cross the border illegally

Tens of thousands of migrants and refugees, mainly from the Middle East, have tried to cross the border in 2021 from Belarus to Poland. Polish border guards and non-governmental organizations on the scene continue to report dozens of illegal border crossing attempts every day.

Since the measures were lifted in July, it remains forbidden to get closer than 200 meters to the border.

The West believes that the wave of migrants from Minsk was motivated to destabilize the region, which the Belarusian government denies. At the height of the crisis, Poland sent thousands of soldiers and police to reinforce border patrols and passed a law allowing migrants to return to Belarus. The so-called pushbacks and general anti-migrant stance of the Warsaw government were condemned by activists and aid organisations.
