The daughter of Hollywood stars Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner gave a speech at the United Nations about the importance of mandatory mask wearing in preventing the COVID-19 outbreak, five years after the disease isolated the world.

Violet Affleck, 19, made her emotional appeal while wearing a KN95 mask as part of "Healthy Indoor Air: A Global Call to Action" at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

The Yale University freshman, who contracted the virus in 2019, lectured world leaders about how the world is ignoring the "ongoing pandemic" and claimed that mask requirements were lifted too quickly.

Violet also criticized "adults" for their "relentless pace of 'returning to normality'", claiming they are "ignoring, minimizing and hiding the spread of airborne transmission.

"Leaders around the world tell us that we are the future," Violet said. "But when it comes to the ongoing pandemic, our present is being stolen before our eyes. Young people lacked both real choice in this matter and information about what was being chosen for us," she added.

Her remarks contradict several studies, including a large study by the Cochrane Library, which ultimately found that masks made "little or no difference" in curbing the spread of COVID.

However, Violet argued that evidence showed that SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted through the air and can persist in closed environments, and that “an infection can result in damage to almost every cell in the body from the brain and heart to the nerves and blood vessels.”

Violet quoted Yale professor Dr. Akiko Iwasaki as saying that "the entire population in the control group, and after just five years, long-standing COVID surpassed asthma as the most common chronic disease in children five years of age or younger."

She added that she was "terrified" that children could spread the virus in schools and "will not know a world without debilitating pain and fatigue, who cannot trust their bodies to play, explore and imagine."

"I'm furious on their behalf. It's negligence of the highest order to look children in the eye and say, 'We knew how to protect you and we didn't,'" the teenager said.
