US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania faced an incident after the escalators at the UN building were blocked. The incident was dubbed “Escalatorgate” by US media and the White House called for an investigation into whether the escalators were intentionally blocked.
"If anyone at the UN intentionally blocked the escalator while the President and First Lady were ascending, they should be fired and investigated immediately," spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told X.
But a UN spokesman said the incident occurred because a videographer in front of Trump accidentally activated a safety mechanism on the escalators, causing them to stop.
Trump jokingly referred to the incident during his Tuesday speech at the UN building, saying, "If the First Lady hadn't been in great shape, she would have fallen."
