After a night of confusion and chaos, Wagner's head, Yevgeny Prigozhin, announced that he was inside Russian army headquarters in Rostov-on-Don.

Moreover, the head of the mercenary group claims that his fighters are already in control of the city's military structures. Although such claims The Guardian says it has not been able to independently verify, it is clear that the situation in the southern Russian city is turbulent and uncertain - and this in a region of strategic importance to Moscow that could have consequences about the conflict in Ukraine.

But what happened that Wagner is today accused of armed insurrection by Russian President Vladimir Putin?

The day before, Prigozhin accused Russian troops of a rocket attack that killed several of his mercenaries. After a series of earlier complaints, this seemed to have filled the cup, and in the most serious escalation of clashes between Wagner's boss and the commanders of the Russian regular army, Progozhin announced the march of his forces on Rostov.

Why exactly here?

Rostov-on-Don is the largest city in southern Russia and the capital of the Rostov region that adjoins parts of eastern Ukraine, where the war is today fiercer than anywhere else. The city - just 100 km from the border with Ukraine - is home to the command of Russia's southern military district, under whose orders actions against Kiev's counteroffensive in the south of the neighboring country are being coordinated. Rostov also houses the command center for the joint group of Russian forces in Ukraine as a whole and is therefore a critical logistics hub for the Russian military.

Any threat to Russia's military presence there is likely to have ramifications for many key aspects of the war in Ukraine, various experts say. Despite claiming to have Russian military structures under control, Prigozhin says his operation will not hinder Moscow's war effort.

"We took control of the Rostov airport so that the military planes would not attack us, but attack the Ukrainians," he said. "We came here to stop the shame in the country we live in," Prigozhin said, before adding: "We are saving Russia."
