The power struggle between Wagner's troupe and the regular Russian army has escalated. Wagner troops marched in Rostov, while a state of terror alert was declared in Moscow.

The conflict has been simmering for a long time but now it has burst into the open. From Russia it is announced about a possible uprising of the head of the militarist troupe, Wagner, Yevgeny Prigoshin against the regular Russian army. The head of the troop, Prigoshin, according to his own information, crossed the border to Russia with the soldiers who were in Ukraine. They have arrived in Rostov-on-Don, Prigoshin declared in a video published on Telegram. "Military buildings in Rostov, including a military airport, are under control," Prigoshin said in the video. Data cannot be verified.

According to him, he will negotiate with the Russian Minister of Defense, Sergei Shoigu, and assured that this action is not a military coup. He has accused Moscow of attacking his troops. Prigoshin further said that the entry into Rostov does not hinder the "special military operation" of Russia. Planes continue to take off from the military airport according to the plan, Prigoshin said. "Planes (...) take off on schedule."

But Prigoshin further said that he and his soldiers are ready "to the end" to act against the Russian army and go all the way to Moscow, if Shoigu and Chief of Staff Valery come to him. We will destroy anyone who gets in our way. In another announcement, it was said that a Russian helicopter, which had opened fire against a civilian convoy, was shot down.

The FSB asks Wagner soldiers to arrest Prigoshin

Previously, the head of the private army had spoken openly against the Russian military leadership and contradicted Russia's well-known argument about the war in Ukraine, that Russia is in danger from Ukraine. The Ministry of Defense in Moscow calls on the Wagner soldiers not to follow Prigoshin's orders, and that they have been "deceived into a criminal adventure", their safety will be guaranteed, the Ministry of Defense promises.

Russia's secret service, the FSB, had earlier appealed to soldiers of the Wagner Corps to arrest their boss. "We call on the fighters of the private army, (...) to stop all military actions against the Russian people, not to follow the criminal and treasonous orders of Prigoshin and to take measures for his arrest," an FSB statement said . Prigoshin's statements are "a call for armed civil conflict within Russian territory."

Tanks have appeared on the streets in the center of Moscow. In the Russian capital, security measures have been increased and all important facilities are under increased surveillance, the state agency TASS has announced. In Moscow, the Committee for Combating Terrorism announced a state of alert in case of terror in Moscow and the regions./ DW
