Kevin McCarthy

The political-parliamentary earthquake in the USA. The House of Representatives of the United States of America voted to impeach its speaker, Republican Kevin McCarthy. This is the first time in American history that a speaker of the House of Representatives has been impeached. 216 of the members of the House of Representatives voted for his dismissal and 210 against.

The motion to impeach him was brought by lawmaker Matt Gaetz, from Mr. McCarthy's Republican Party. Gaetz, meanwhile, is a loyalist of Donald Trump and a member of the hard line associated with the tycoon, who is aiming to dictate the line in the Republican Party. The dismissal of Kevin McCarthy is considered a victory that confirms the strength of the former president in the party. Eight Old Party line MPs were enough to see McCarthy lose his majority.

Gaetz had accused McCarthy of not doing enough to cut federal spending.

"Think twice before you plunge us into chaos, because that will be the result if we leave that seat vacant," lawmaker Tom Cole warned his fellow Republicans in a debate on the floor of Congress Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023. But
Gaetz countered: "I don't think voting against Kevin McCarthy is chaos. I think $33 trillion in debt is chaos. "I think facing an annual deficit of 2.2 trillion dollars is chaos."
Most Republicans voted to keep McCarthy in office. But because of the slight Republican lead over the Democrats in the House of Representatives, only a small number of Republicans' no votes, along with those of the Democrats, were enough to remove Speaker McCarthy.

Some Republicans had also expressed displeasure about a deal Mr. McCarthy struck with President Joe Biden earlier this year to limit spending levels in exchange for raising the debt ceiling.

"Many of us have repeatedly pleaded with the president to use the debt ceiling request to push through spending cuts and reforms. Instead, he negotiated an unlimited increase in the debt ceiling," said Republican lawmaker Bob Good on the floor of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, urging his colleagues to vote to impeach Mr. McCarthy.

Hard-line Republican Matt Gaetz, who represents a Florida district, had threatened for months to use a procedural tactic to try to oust Mr. McCarthy from the speakership. A vote to impeach Mr. McCarthy required a simple majority in the 435-member House of Representatives. Republicans control the chamber with a 221-212 majority over opposition Democrats.

Mr. McCarthy's removal as speaker essentially paralyzes legislative activity in the House of Representatives, which faces another government shutdown deadline on Nov. 17 if Congress does not vote on extensions. The White House said it hopes the House will move quickly to elect a new speaker, a post that is second in line in the political hierarchy in the United States behind the president and vice president.

The impeachment motion is a rare and powerful procedural tool that has been used only twice in the past century against Republican presidents. But in recent years, conservatives have used the motion as a weapon against their leaders.
