The Turkish Parliament has approved the draft law regarding the protocol of Sweden's accession to NATO.
After a vote in the Turkish parliament on Tuesday, Hungary became the only NATO member that has yet to approve Sweden's bid to join the alliance.
In October 2023, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed Sweden's NATO membership protocol and submitted it to parliament.
Finland and Sweden – both Nordic countries near or bordering Russia – applied for NATO membership shortly after Russia launched its war against Ukraine in February 2022.
Turkey approved Finland's membership of the alliance in March 2023, but said it was waiting for Sweden to adhere to a June 2022 tripartite memorandum to address Ankara's security concerns.
Any new NATO member must be approved by all current members, including Turkey, a member of the alliance for more than 70 years.
