Journalist  Fernando Nunez  was killed by unknown gunmen while returning from reporting in the northern department of La Libertad, the National Association of Journalists of Peru (ANP) announced on Sunday.

The journalist and director of the news website Kamila TV became the third journalist to be killed in Peru this year.

Fernando Nunez "was attacked by armed men while riding a motorcycle with his brother" the day before yesterday, Saturday afternoon, the ANP explained in the statement published via X.

The journalist died on the spot, his brother has been hospitalized in critical condition.

The murder was committed in the Guadalupe region, in the department of La Libertad, where 236 murders were recorded from January to October, according to Peruvian police.

The association asked the authorities to conduct the investigation, considering that the victim's journalistic work was the motive for the crime.

"This new event (...) shows the unbearable escalation of violence against those who exercise the function of information " in the country, the ANP denounced.

According to official data, 1,888 murders were recorded in Peru from January to October -- a 13% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

In October, former President Dina Boluarte (2022-2025) was impeached by Congress for "permanent moral incapacity" for failing to address the security crisis facing the Latin American country. The then-President of Parliament, José Gerry, took office as interim president until elections in 2026.
