Russian oligarchs are losing yachts at Europe's ports

Western authorities have seized super yachts owned by Russian oligarchs as part of sanctions against Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.

A yacht owned by Igor Sechin, the chief of the Russian energy company, Rosneft, was seized by French customs officers near Marseille.

According to reports, German authorities seized another $600 million yacht owned by Russian metal tycoon Alisher Usmanov.

These are the latest moves against Russia as sanctions have been tightened.

The BBC reports that some oligarchs sanctioned by the European Union have been "shocked" when they discovered that their debit cards no longer work and now they are relying on the use of cash from safes.

The French acted quickly on Wednesday, when customs officers noticed that Sechin's 88-metre "Amore Vero" was preparing to leave at speed.

He arrived at the Mediterranean port of La Ciotat in January and would remain there, while being repaired until April 1.

At the Hamburg shipyard, authorities seized Usmanov's 156-metre "Dilbar", the world's largest motor yacht for gross tonnage, according to Forbes magazine.
