The United Nations on Monday rejected a US resolution to soften the General Assembly's stance on Russia's war in Ukraine. US President Donald Trump is trying to broker peace in Ukraine after three years of fighting with Russian forces. The UN vote gives Kiev and its European allies a diplomatic victory.

The 193-member General Assembly voted on rival draft resolutions, one from Washington and one written by Ukraine and European states to mark the third anniversary of the Russian attack on Ukraine.

The United States was forced to abstain in the vote on its resolution after European countries successfully amended Washington's version to word it in a way that reflected the UN's support for Kiev during the war, including Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity.

"This war has never been about Ukraine alone. It is about the fundamental right of every country to exist, to choose its own path and to live free from aggression," Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister Betsa Mariana said in her speech before the vote.

The standoff at the United Nations came after President Trump launched efforts to mediate an end to the war, causing a rift with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The effort has also raised concerns among European allies that they and Kiev could be excluded from peace talks. U.S. and Russian officials met last Tuesday.

The amended resolution drafted by the United States received 93 votes in favor, 73 abstentions and eight votes against. Russia also failed to amend the text of the United States resolution.

Before the vote on the United States text, US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea said the proposed European and Russian changes were "a war of words rather than an attempt to end the war".

Voting in the Security Council

The assembly adopted the resolution drafted by Ukraine and European countries with 93 votes in favor, 65 abstentions and 18 votes against. Along with the United States, other countries that voted against were Russia, North Korea and Israel.

"Today our American colleagues have seen for themselves that the path to peace in Ukraine will not be easy and there will be many who will try to ensure that peace is not achieved for as long as possible. However, this should not stop us," Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the assembly.

“Bota do paqe. Ukraina do paqe”, tha ambasadori i Kanadasë në OKB, Bob Rae.
