WHO warns: Dangerous return of chikungunya, the virus spread by mosquitoes

The World Health Organization (WHO) has made an urgent appeal to prevent a large-scale return of the chikungunya virus, a mosquito-borne disease that spread around the world two decades ago.

The alarm is growing over the new outbreaks in the Indian Ocean region, which are now spreading to Europe and other continents. According to WHO official Diana Rojas Alvarez, about 5.6 billion people in 119 countries live in areas with potential risk for the spread of this virus.

The virus causes fever, severe joint pain and in some cases can lead to long-term disability. Alvarez warned that the situation is resembling the 2004-2005 epidemic, when the virus affected nearly half a million people, initially in small island territories, before spreading around the globe.

According to her, the new wave of spread began in early 2025, with outbreaks on islands known as La Reunion and Mauritius - areas that had been hit before. In La Reunion alone, the virus has already affected about a third of the population.

The spread continues in Madagascar, Somalia, Kenya, as well as in India and other regions of Southeast Asia. The WHO also expresses concern about the increase in imported cases in Europe, where France alone has recorded about 800 cases since May 1.

Since there is no specific treatment for chikungunya and the virus spreads quickly, the WHO emphasizes the importance of prevention. The use of insecticides and wearing long-sleeved clothing are recommended as protective measures, as mosquitoes bite during the day.
