Macron and his wife sue American commentator Candace Owens for defamation

French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron have sued right-wing American commentator Candace Owens for defamation.

In a lawsuit filed Wednesday in the state of Delaware against Owens and her businesses, the Macrons say she has carried out persistent defamatory attacks on them with the aim of increasing her audience, gaining fame and making a profit.

Owens declared in early 2024 that she would “put her entire professional reputation on the line” over the claim that Brigitte Macron “is actually a man.” Since then, she has further amplified those claims, adding others, including an eight-part podcast series titled Becoming Brigitte, the lawsuit states.

According to the lawsuit, the Macron couple have asked Owens to publicly retract these "patently false" claims, but she has not only failed to do so, but has continued to ridicule them and use them as material for her increasingly aggressive public.

“The fabricated, false and absurd slanders include claims that Ms Macron was born a man, stole someone else’s identity and transformed into Brigitte; that she and President Macron are blood relatives who commit incest; that Macron was elected President of France as part of a CIA mind control program like MKUltra; and that they both engaged in forgery, fraud and abuse of power to hide these ‘secrets’.”

“Since Ms. Owens has continued to amplify these lies despite repeated requests from our attorneys to retract them, we have concluded that the only remaining course of action was to seek legal action,” the Macrons said in a statement. “Ms. Owens’ defamatory campaign was intended to harass and cause pain to us and our families, as well as to garner attention and notoriety for herself. We gave her every opportunity to drop the allegations, but she refused. It is our sincere hope that this lawsuit will establish the truth and put an end to this smear campaign once and for all.”

The lawsuit claims that these lies have caused great damage to the Macron couple, who are facing a “global campaign of humiliation,” turning their lives into the object of lies for profit. In addition to the damage to their reputation, they have spent “significant sums of money to improve the public truth,” including legal representation fees.

"Every time the Macron couple leaves the house, they do so with the knowledge that many people have heard and even believe these disgusting slanders. This is intrusive, inhumane and deeply unfair," the lawsuit states.

According to the Financial Times, the Macrons are set to appear in court in Delaware for a trial. They are being represented by the law firm Clare Locke, known for winning major defamation cases, including Dominion's lawsuit against Fox News.

The lawsuit follows three separate requests the Macrons sent Owens to retract the claims, which included evidence to refute them. According to a press release from Clare Locke, Owens used these requests to “further mock the Macrons” and fabricate even more damaging lies.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Owens said she “has no intention of remaining silent.” She is expected to address the lawsuit on her show Wednesday.

“This is a foreign government attacking the First Amendment rights of an independent American journalist. Candace has repeatedly requested an interview with Brigitte Macron. Instead of providing a comment, Brigitte is trying to intimidate a journalist into silence. In France, politicians can intimidate journalists, but this is not France. This is America.”

It is unusual for a sitting president to sue a journalist, although Donald Trump has filed several lawsuits against American media outlets in recent months, some of which have been settled.

Attacks on Brigitte Macron’s appearance and slander about her gender have been circulating for years, but Candace Owens has significantly amplified them in the US. Other prominent female political figures, such as Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris, have also faced similar social media campaigns claiming they are “secretly transgender.” According to a 2021 report by the Wilson Center, this trend is “deeply misogynistic.” “These narratives promote the idea of the deceitful woman, implying that transgender people are inherently deceitful, and that this deceit is the reason for the power these women have,” the report said.

The Macrons have previously sued two women in France over the theory that Brigitte Macron is biologically male. They were initially found guilty of defamation, but the verdict was overturned and Brigitte has now appealed.
