The disease COVID-19 no longer represents a global health emergency, said this Friday, May 5, the World Health Organization (WHO).
This announcement represents an important step towards ending the pandemic that has killed more than 6.9 million people and caused disruptions in the global economy.
"Yesterday, the Emergency Committee met for the 15th time and recommended me to declare the health emergency over. I have accepted this advice. Therefore, it is with great hope that I declare the end of the global health emergency for COVID-19", said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The WHO Emergencies Committee had initially on January 30, 2020 declared COVID-19 a disease of the highest level of threat.
The WHO said that despite the fact that COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency, this does not mean that the disease has disappeared.
According to WHO data, the number of victims from COVID-19 has decreased. In January 2021, the world recorded over 100,000 victims per week from this disease, while according to the data of April this year, this number is over 3,500.
"However, this does not mean that COVID-19 is not a global health threat," said Ghebreyesus.
The WHO does not declare the start or end of pandemics, although this organization began using the term pandemic for COVID in March 2020.
Last year, US President Joe Biden declared the pandemic over.
The first cases of the disease COVID-19 were recorded at the end of 2019 in Wuhan, China. Then, the disease spread around the world./REL
