During the attempt to enter the EU through the Balkan countries, minor migrants are exposed to physical, psychological and sexual violence, according to the study of the organization for the protection of children, Save the Children

"I saw with my own eyes how the Croatian police mistreated my friends...some even injured their legs, others hit them in the head, in the eyes." (Ehsan, boy, 17)

"A smuggler (...) took out a knife(...) the girl screamed, and tried to escape, but he raped her and we saw everything with our own eyes" (Hasnen, boy, 15)

"When they see a good-looking guy, they abuse him, and the police do nothing. It doesn't matter if he's on the street with his family or alone. You just have to be good-looking." (Hanan, boy, 17)

These are part of a 48 page report with the confessions of refugee minors who are on the road alone or with their families. Most from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran and Syria. Through the so-called Balkan route - that is, from Turkey, Greece, North Macedonia, Serbia, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina they want to reach the west.

The data were collected in the framework of the study "Wherever we go, someone harms us" recently published by the organization for the protection of children, Save the Children. The study was conducted in collaboration with the University of Sarajevo, where extensive interviews were conducted with minors aged 13-19 in refugee camps in Bihac, Tuzla and Sarajevo. For this study, 27 child protection activists were interviewed.

The perpetrators of the crimes are smugglers and policemen

The greatest difficulty that migrants have on the way to the west is presented at the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the newest member of the EU, Croatia, which on January 1, 2023 will also become part of the Schengen area. To achieve this, the Croatian government has pursued a rather harsh and violent policy against migrants, with the aim of profiling itself as a reliable defender of the EU's external borders. Croatian police methods include brutal violence and illegal interrogation of refugees, known as "pushbacks".
